First Presbyterian Church Newsletter - January 15, 2016

January 15 2016
Dear Friends,

This weekend First Church worships with Brooklyn Heights Synagogue in two interfaith services: Friday, January 15 at 6:30 at the synagogue (131 Remsen Street), and Sunday, January 17 at 11:00 at First Church.  A variety of musical selections including a choral arrangement of "Precious Lord" and "Glory" from the movie Selma will be offered by a combined choir from the synagogue and First Church in both services.

On Sunday, members of the Social Justice committee and Youthful Fellowship will serve as liturgists. We will hear scripture (based on Psalm 118) in Hebrew by Cantor Bruce Ruben. Rev.Nadine and Rabbi Serge Lippe will offer greetings and words for the passing of peace/shalom, and our prayers of the people will be offered by Rabbi Lippe.  My sermonic reflection is called "Moments for the Movement" which will tie all of the messages together, prayerfully to re-energize us to see ourselves as co-workers for a Civil Rights Movement that is still in process.  This weekend's interfaith worship in two locations is the result of many prayers, and many persons working diligently to bring it to reality. May this be one of many interactions of faith and fellowship between First Church and its interfaith partners including the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue.  In the words of Dr. King, "Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love."

Blessings,
Eric

Focus on Hunger: The Mission and Social Action Committee has a goal to educate the entire congregation on the issues around food and hunger in our country and around the world, and why First Presbyterian is involved in alleviating the suffering associated with a lack of food.  On Thursday, January 14th the Food Pantry served 101 clients with 12 volunteers.

Somewhere in the world someone starves to death every 3.6 seconds, and 75 percent of those are children under the age of five.

Criminal Justice Activities in concert with The Church of Gethsemane

Overview- The Church of Gethsemane-   www.churchofgethsemane.org
A Presbyterian Church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, founded in 1986, which was created by and for formerly incarcerated men and women, their families, neighborhood people and people who are called into ministry with the poor. Reverend Diane Lacey is the pastor.

Overview of Project Connect – A successful, 25 year-old program of The Church of Gethsemane that connects men and women who are incarcerated to the Church of Gethsemane while they are still inside the prison system. Project Connect uses a four-pronged approach to join in ministry with people who are incarcerated and then helps in the transition back into the home and the community upon release.  Minister Chibueze Okorie is the Project Connect Director.

·         First, it engages in ministry with and for incarcerated men and women through letters,             visits, care packages, contacts with family members, an annual Christmas party for their             children and letters of assurance to parole boards
·         Second, it provides participation in a faith community outside prison walls through             church membership at The Church of Gethsemane (PCUSA) through a 7 Part             Correspondence Membership Course. This offers them the experience of an extended             family.
·         Third, Project Connect provides direct services upon release helping people with basic             needs such as clothing, food, Metro-cards and emergency funds.
·         Fourth, upon release, Project Connect provides a re-entry program that includes             referrals to social service agencies for specific needs, such as job training & employment,             housing, health services, spiritual counsel, and a re-entry peer support group that meets             twice a month. Participants can become members of the Church, as soon as they start             attending church services.

Overview of First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn involvement with Gethsemane
Through the involvement of many members of our church, the members of Gethsemane demonstrated to those of us who are more comfortable and whose crisis and challenges typically haven't been on a scale that Gethsemane members have faced, how God transforms lives. It is revealing to see the life transformations of many of their members, who may have been incarcerated for 10-40 years, paying their debt to society, connecting to God as their Savior and then being so thankful for what they have, even as they struggle against all of the impediments that our society has created for them. Their individual testimonies about the value of their involvement with a supportive  faith community that helps keep them strong on a day to day basis is a good lesson for all of us.

During the past year, over 20 members of our church have attended services, prepared lunches, joined Gethsemane staff on prison visits, helped administratively or donated clothes and food for Gethsemane and an additional 25 members have contributed to the group letters. We are hopeful that we will double the number of our members who directly participate with supporting Gethsemane in 2016. Participants from First Presbyterian of Brooklyn have benefitted significantly as a result of the warm welcome that we have received and the lessons learned from our fellowship with their members.

The involvement and love by members of our church and other faith communities in the New York area helps them to be more confident as they assimilate. The lessons we learn from Gethsemane help us to better understand the terrible discrimination that formally incarcerated men and women face today and encourage us to do something about it.

Our financial support of mission projects is good but when we can also get directly involved with our hearts and hands, lives are changed. Our involvement enables us to fulfill Jesus's instructions to us to visit the prisoners, feed the hungry and help the poor.

Sundays January 17 at 10 am, Thurman Room
Journeying through Epiphany:  After the celebrations of Christmas and Epiphany, we now step into winter, the figurative un-tracked snowfield that opens before us. Behind are arrayed the physical manifestations of Christ's presence, but what markers are there for us now, in this uncharted landscape before the holy time of Lent? Let's get lost together and see what reference points we might discover in Scripture, secular literature, and in our own lives.  Led by Erik Brogger
Wednesday, January 20, 27, and Febraury 3 at 7pm, Elliot Room
First Talks Race: Adult Ed is taking three Wednesday sessions - January 20, 27, and February 3 to engage in difficult yet intimate conversations on race.  These conversations allow members to ask questions and hear answers about the assumptions, privileges, and possibilities of unity in difference.  As we celebrate our intentionally diverse congregation, these sessions help us to unpack the complexities of what that term means in a safe space.  Members bring soup and snacks to share at 6:30 with discussion beginning at 7:00 pm.  Led by Eric Thomas

Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King

Ahead of MLK Day 2016, join us for interfaith celebrations of the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King through music, lessons, and readings from the Christian and Jewish traditions. Worship includes choirs and musicians from congregations at both Brooklyn Heights Synagogue and First Presbyterian.

WHEN/WHERE:

Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, 6:30 PM, Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, 131 Remsen Street

Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, 11:00 AM, First Presbyterian

Thank you from the Stewardship Committee!

Our 2016 Pledge campaign is nearing completion, and we want you give you a heartfelt thanks for the many pledges of support to FPC.  We have a record number of new pledges this year, and have very nearly met our commitment goal.  A few more pledges will push us over our goal and ensure the budget for the important year ahead.  Thank you for the commitment and love and offerings you have given to our church.

If you still wish to make a pledge, here's the link:  (link)
