Won't You Be My Neighbor?

Greetings of peace, First Church!
Thank you for a wonderful welcome last Sunday. I'm told we had record attendance for a July 4th weekend, but what I most appreciated my first Sunday in the pulpit, was our mighty choir, the joyful celebration of the Lord's Supper, and each one who came by to create the beauty of God's beloved community with bread and cup and later with scones and lemonade.
Two young women visited with us on Sunday from Hungary because someone they met told them not to miss First Church. That is a great story to share with the world. Don't miss what God is doing at First Church! People recognize God's Spirit in this place, and they are telling the world about your ability to throw arms wide open for all God's people, especially those by the side of the road. There is good news in this place, First Church, and we will continue, this Sunday, to tell the world about it.
Slowly but surely, I am finding my footing and place this first week, while also thinking about Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and all the children of God for whom footing and place are elusive. Because of race or religion; because of economic status or physical ability; because of age or poor choices in the past, footing and place can disappear like water poured upon sand. Like the man on the Jericho Road that I will preach about on Sunday, the world needs to know the good news of a people who will not pass them by. We are those people. I hope you will be here on Sunday at 10 AM to help me tell the story with your singing and praying; with your giving and receiving; with your talking and eating.
Wherever your travels take you this weekend, know that God is on the road with you.

Summer Worship Schedule
Don't miss the extra hour of sun on summer Sundays. Through September 4th, worship will begin at 10:00 AM.
Also, during the summer the choir gathers Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM with no Thursday rehearsal. It is a great time for those who would like to sing with the choir in a casual environment!

Focus on Hunger
The Mission and Social Action Committee has a goal to educate the entire congregation on the issues around food and hunger in our country and around the world, and why First Presbyterian is involved in alleviating the suffering associated with a lack of food.
On Thursday, July 7th, the Food Pantry served 105 clients with 10 volunteers.

In the United States, hunger isn't caused by a lack of food, but rather by the continued prevalence of poverty.

Criminal Justice Activities in Concert With the Church of Gethsemane
FPC continues to be active with the Church of Gethsemane.
Prison Visits:
Minister Okorie and Dave Ehlke will be making a prison visit to Sing sing prison in Ossining on Thursday, July 14. We will be leaving around 8:00 AM and will return around 4:00 PM. Please contact Dave Ehlke if you would like to participate and ride with us.
Letter Writing:
We will be preparing our next group letter to Project Connect members on Sunday, July 10th, after worship. Please stop by our table at coffee hour to participate.
Lunch:
Lunch preparation after 11 AM Worship service at Gethsemane on Sunday, July 17th, will be provided by Linda & Willy Norton and Jane & Dave Ehlke. If anyone else would like to participate with a salad or dessert, please contact Jane Ehlke.
The Church of Gethsemane will be closed during the month of August . Hopefully, we will have a contingent of members of the Church of Gethsemane attend church at FPC during August.
