Greetings First Church Family and Friends,
The image above, known as The Blue Marble, is said to be one of the most reproduced and widely distributed images in human history. The earth is a gift to us from a very good God, and efforts like the Paris Agreement are in keeping with what it means for Christians to be good stewards of the planet God entrusted to us. Caring for God's planet is our spiritual responsibility. The balance of gases that makes the air temperate and breathable, the distribution of water and land that covers the surface, food for our needs hanging on trees or growing in soil…when you pause to consider the God who made this astounding planet and us, who do you imagine that God to be?
Our guest preacher this Trinity Sunday, Rev. Dr. Lorena Parrish, will explore some thoughts about the God who is three in one and one in three – the God who made the earth and made us to care for it. This God loves us beyond our imagining and also loves the creation we inhabit. Dr. Parrish is my good friend but also a theologian, community organizer, activist-scholar, and outstanding preacher. Thank you for giving her a warm First Church welcome while I am away this weekend at our Family Retreat.
If you are out of town this weekend, enjoying God's gift of a good earth somewhere other than Brooklyn, please join the live stream at 11 am or catch the sermon podcast later in the week. Update on the 2017 Pledge Drive
As of May 4th, 2017, we have received 119 Pledge Cards for a total of $337,166.
Our goal this year is a commitment of $343,000.
We are less than $10,000 away from that target. Please help us reach or exceed our goal. Pledge today!

Half Marathon Training!
Our first marathon training session for the Brooklyn RocknRoll Half Marathon is this Monday, June 12th @ 7:00 PM. Meet in the Peace Garden and come ready to walk/run. See you there!

Focus on Hunger
The Mission and Social Action Committee has a goal to educate the entire congregation on the issues around food and hunger in our country and around the world, and why First Presbyterian is involved in alleviating the suffering associated with a lack of food.
|
Almost 9 million children around the world died before they reached their fifth birthday during 2008. Approximately a third of all of those deaths were attributed to hunger and malnutrition.
|
On Thursday, June 1st, our Food Pantry served 119 guests with the
help of 26 volunteers.
|

The FPC Social Action Committee and Adult Education Committee are hosting the #CLOSErikers campaign team to inform our community on the status of the campaign and important work that is in process.
The goal of the #CLOSErikers campaign is to close the Rikers Island jails as soon as possible, transform the justice system in NYC, and build communities. Closing Rikers will require the City to reduce overall incarceration, and detain far fewer people, both in the immediate and long term. Temporary secure housing must be an intervention of last resort. We want a smaller justice system that repairs harm and maximizes fairness, accountability, and equity.
By closing Rikers Island, New York City can achieve justice for thousands and focus on the important work of healing and rebuilding the communities where Rikers has brought suffering.
We hope you can join us for this important information session and support the #CLOSErikers campaign in calling for New Yorkers to boldly reimagine our city's failed criminal justice system and become a national leader in ending mass incarceration.

Criminal Justice Activities in Concert
With the Church of Gethsemane
First Church continues to be active in concert with the Church of Gethsemane.
- Group Letter writing: Two weeks ago, we prepared our monthly group letter to Project Connect members during fellowship hour.
- Sunday Lunch after Worship. Jane & Dave Ehlke, Linda &Willy Norton and Diane Grimes will be providing June 11 Lunch at Gethsemane. We are looking for volunteers for the rest of June and July.
- Prison Visits: Steve deFluiter and Dave Ehlke will be visiting Project Connect members at Green Haven prison on Wednesday, June 14. The Womens Prison visit has been rescheduled for June 17.
- Administrative Support: Ongoing administrative support has been provided by Jane and Dave Ehlke. The Project Connect database has been expanded to 215 members in 30 different prisons.

Clark Street Subway Station Closure!
Notice - the Clark Street (2) (3) subway station will be closed on weekends from June 16 to spring 2018. People who normally take the subway to church need to walk from Borough Hall or take the B25, B26, B38, B41, B52 or B103.
