Greetings First Church Family and Friends,
As we continue our survey of the early church, we turn this Sunday to one of Paul's letters. The Apostle Paul wrote the largest number of documents in the Christian New Testament, but he was no lone ranger for the gospel. He worked with and was part of community. Paul's ministry was characterized by partnership because he believed that all the children of God share in the "the defense of the gospel." He used his letters to invite and encourage the early churches to check their behavior in light of the core teachings of Jesus: love of God, love of neighbor, and love of self.
It is striking that in his salutation to the church at Philippi, Paul addresses, not the leadership of the church, but the entire community of believers. Paul could have written directly to a bishop; he was that important. He could have addressed his remarks to a priest; he was a very big deal. Paul could have shared his thoughts solely with the elders or big donors of the church but instead, he wrote, "to all the saints," all the members of the faith community.
On Sunday, as we come to the table, as we break bread and share the cup, we will consider what it means to be focused, not on ourselves or our own individual families, but on a shared common life that takes seriously God's love for all the saints.

Focus on Hunger
For the past 4 years we have been sharing facts and statistics about hunger and food insecurity in our country and around the world. It has been part of the Social Action Committee's effort to educate the congregation on issues around food and hunger both here and abroad. The Food Pantry is one of the ways First Church is involved in responding to alleviating the suffering associated with a lack of food.
Though we will not be continuing with the weekly stats, we hope you will take a look at these two resources, which provide a broad overview of the complex realities attached to this subject. Also, consider clicking the yellow button on The Hunger Site website daily to provide free food for others.
Please consider supporting the pantry in the following ways:
Volunteers are needed Wednesday evenings from 7:15 PM - 8:00 PM to receive fresh fruits and vegetables for our food pantry. If you are available to come to First Church and receive donations from our partners at Brooklyn Bridge CSA and Sweet Pea CSA, please call thechurch office to be connected to pantry coordinator, Jane Woland.

Steph Quintana will continue to help us explore the connections between spirituality and the work of justice, and just so you remember, Steph knows what she's talking about! She worked on issues of immigration justice on the US-Mexico border as a community organizer with the Southside Worker Center and as a social/legal services provider with the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project. Steph loves justice and can help us with our ongoing work of "coming out Christian." More spirituality and justice takeaways!

Clark Street Subway Station Closure
The Clark Street (2 and 3 trains) subway station will be closed on weekends until Summer 2018. People who normally take the subway to First Church need to walk from Borough Hall or take the B25, B26, B38, B41, B52 or B103 bus.
