Greetings First Church Family and Friends,
Whitney Houston inspired me many years ago, with one of her lesser known songs, to sign-off my letters, you are loved. Her words always sounded to me like a word from God. You are loved. A former church member told me, "It's nice to know you love us, Adriene, but it's more important to know that God loves us – thank you for always signing off with, you are loved." On Sunday we will look at the story of Abram and Sarai and the God of the universe who says to them and us, you are loved.
This Sunday is also Homecoming Sunday when we welcome many of you back from summers away and some of you back from months and even years away. We can't wait to see you – you are loved! After worship we will celebrate you and our community of generosity with a Thanksgiving Luncheon – a gift of gratitude for the time, talent, and treasure you share with our community of faith on Henry Street and beyond. We appreciate the many ways you show up in and for the ministries of First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn with your hours of service, your wisdom, and your financial support. See you Sunday at 10:00 am for Christian education and 11:00 am for worship.

Thursday, September 20th | Community Discussion on proposed new Brooklyn House of Detention
6:00 PM at PS 133 (William Butler School) located at 610 Baltic (at 4th Ave)
An important community meeting led by the Mayors Office, discussing plans for the new Brooklyn jail. The existing jail at 275 Atlantic Ave will be demolished and a new significantly larger jail will be constructed on the site. This is an opportunity for community input and discussion before plans are finalized. This is part of the closing Rikers jail process and distributing incarcerated people to borough-based jails. Additional information on the issue can be found at this link. Dave Ehlke plans to attend and urges others in the neighborhood to attend.

The Bible and Mass Incarceration: A Biblical Foundation for a Radical Politics of Justice
A 5-week series on faith and mass incarceration that concludes with a field trip with Brooklyn Heights Synagogue

- Field Trip to Brooklyn Detention Complex with Brooklyn Heights Synagogue (TBD)
Conor is imagining the first gathering as a contemporary introduction to the prison industrial complex. The remaining gatherings will look at imprisonment through the stories of our faith using biblical characters like Peter, Judas, Shadrach, Meshach, Abendago, and Jesus.

Wednesday September 26 - Cuba Speaks for Itself
You and Your Friends are Invited! Our White Rose ministry is part of the organizing of this event on September 26 at Riverside Church. A VERY high level delegation from Cuba will be in NYC for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, and they will be speaking at a ticket-only public event. Window restoration - Double Your Impact
We are seeking offerings specifically to restore one of our glorious, historic Tiffany windows - the fisherman window on the north side of the sanctuary. A generous anonymous donor has offered to match all gifts made for this purpose, so the donor is willing to cover up to half of the estimated $18,000 cost. This restoration will bring out the incomparable beauty of another of our windows, and is necessary to prevent possible permanent harm. Please note "window restoration" on any check or payment made for this purpose, and submit it with the offering or by sending it to the Church office. Contact Annie, Rev. Adriene, or Stewardship co-chairs Odette Perriel and David Jones for more information.

On Thursday, September 13th, our Food Pantry served 114 clients
with the help of 12 dedicated volunteers.
