Nina Pop and Tony McDade - #BlackLivesMatter #BlackQueerLivesMatter
Nina Pop was found stabbed to death in her apartment in Missouri on May 3rd.
Tony McDade was shot and killed by a white police officer in Florida on May 27th.
Both were victims of the shocking "epidemic of violence" that disproportionately targets
trans people of color in the US.

Good morning First Church Brooklyn Friends and Family,
As I write this, helicopters are flying overhead. They have been flying overhead for days – morning and evening. They are the sound of my going to sleep and the sound of my waking. Helicopters have become the soundtrack of my days, drowning out the applause for essential workers, drowning out the false sense of peace that evaporated when George Floyd and so many others were murdered.
Helicopters remind me that I'm living in a combat zone. They remind me that Black people are not safe here. George Floyd is dead. Breonna Taylor is dead. Sean Reed is dead. Amaud Arbery is dead. Nina Pop is dead. Tony McDade is dead. People are angry and hurt and fed up. All these Black lives. People feel they have nothing left to lose.
And on Sunday we will gather in faithful community as God's people. We will pray and sing. We will weep and weep and weep…because we are not good. Thank God for faithful community that can hold us when we are not good. See you Sunday.

With a moment of silence for Tony McDade and Nina Pop
Stonewall was a riot.
There were no rainbow Budweiser banners at the first Pride march. Children were not throwing glitter. No one had rainbow socks.
Stonewall was a riot. It was an uprising largely comprised of transwomen of color. The police brutalized human beings because of their gender Identify and expression, their race, the people they fell in love with. The company they kept. Windows were broken. It was part of a revolution. And that first Pride march, in the wake of the riots of Stonewall, was covered by the media that year, and for years after, as a show of force by sexual deviants who wanted to harm innocent people.
This year, as we witness together yet another collective uprising against police brutality, FPC is hosting an evening of LGBTQ storytelling and discussion. We will grieve, honor and mourn the recent deaths of Tony McDade and Nina Pop as we share our own stories of Pride. Join us, and our storytellers, to listen and learn and share about how the spirit of that first Pride March lives on, despite so many forces that align to whitewash, corporatize, profit from, and neutralize the prophetic spirit of Pride.

NEED FOOD? WILLING TO DELIVER FOOD?
New York City has created the GetFoodNYC Food Delivery Program to provide food for coronavirus (COVID-19)-vulnerable and food-insecure New Yorkers not currently served through existing food delivery programs. NYC is asking TLC-licensed drivers to participate in this important work by assisting in delivering food to New Yorkers who must stay home. FPC Pride
Greetings from the LGBTQ+ Ministry! June is Pride month, celebrated each year to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the LGBTQ+ Liberation Movement in the United States. This year, FPC Pride is going virtual! Stay tuned for the exciting list of events that we hope you will consider attending.
If you identify as LGBTQ+, we are asking you to share your story — tell us about your First Pride! Our "Queer Memoir" story-sharing will take place on Friday, June 5th, at 5PM. ALL ages welcome! Interested? Questions? Please reach out to Elder Dimitri Moise or Rev. April Stace. Thank you!
Cash Grants to Those Formerly Employed
The Brooklyn Heights Association has launched a fund to provide cash grants of $250 to people formerly employed in Brooklyn Heights but who have lost jobs due to the coronavirus shutdown. We are primarily aiming at hourly workers, many of whom are not eligible for government assistance due to immigration or other issues, but not exclusively. We are partnered with the Arab American Family Services Center in this effort. You can learn more here.

The New York City Department of Education is committed to making free meals available daily for any New Yorker
- Meals can be picked up at all Meal Hubs 7:30 am to 1:30 pm, Monday through Friday
- Meals Hubs will operate for children and families from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, and for adults from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
- No one will be turned away at any time
- All adults and children can pick up multiple meals at one time
- Vegetarian and halal options available at all sites
- No dining space is available, so meals must be eaten off premises
- Parents and guardians may pick up meals for their children
- No registration or ID required

Food Pantry

On Thursday, June 4th, our pantry served 10 clients with the help of 7 volunteers.
We will maintain the bins on the church steps to support the food insecure and the homeless population who have benefitted from the offering. If you need food, please help yourself. If you have food to share, thank you for dropping off. Please contact the church office to inquire about volunteering. PLEASE DO NOT ARRIVE UNSCHEDULED as we must manage the number of personel on site.

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood

FPC Men's Group Meets virtually each Wednesday from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM to discuss what we are reading, and if time allows, solve as many as possible of the world's problems.
Our current book is Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, host of the Daily Show. It describes his growing up in South Africa in the era when Apartheid was coming apart and was ultimately dismantled.
