Dear First Church Brooklyn Family, The Christian call is not an invitation to comfort. Spiritual peace may prevail, a comforting grace may hold you through moments of pain or fear, but that's provisional. Our hope is the transformation of the world, with all the discomfort such radical changes imply. It's Black August, a month dedicated to the history of radical Black struggle, and I want to spend some time thinking about these histories together on Sunday, because the lessons are so alive and urgent and beautiful. Let's gather again to ground ourselves in a common story, joined around a common hope. Let's sing and pray and witness to the glory of God which takes many forms, the chief of which is liberation. | Looking for Food and Fellowship Volunteers First Church Brooklyn serves a Sunday fellowship lunch once a month at the Church of the Gethsemane, our sister Presbyterian church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, whose members are mostly formerly incarcerated. First Church volunteers prepare a meal, either at home or at the church's kitchen, attend worship at 11:00AM, and serve lunch after service to approximately 15-20 congregants. It's a wonderful opportunity to make good food and even better friends. We are looking for volunteers for September and October, on whatever Sunday works for you. Please contact Marta Nelson if you have questions or would like to volunteer. |
| Food Pantry  Serving Thursday, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM On Thursday, August 3rd, our pantry served 105 clients with the help of 7 volunteers. We are maintaining food bins and a community fridge at the church to provide round the clock support to the food insecure and unhoused. If you need food, please help yourself. If you have food to share, thank you for dropping off. Volunteers are welcome to arrive on Thursdays between 8:00 and 11:00 AM to serve in the pantry. No advanced notice required. | The Rejected Books of the Bible Study Study has started, join us Tuesdays through August 22nd As the canon was being formed, a number of books were rejected and left on the cutting room floor. Our tradition hasn't maintained any general familiarity with these texts that were very important to some people, while ultimately not making the cut. Why didn't they? What was wrong with the story they told or the theology they articulated? What could they have to say that might be relevant to our lives today? Let's read a few of these, beginning with the Gospel of Thomas, on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM. We'll read parts of six different books over six weeks and discuss. We'd love to see you there! Zoom link

| Homeless Ministry 
Join us from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Wednesday evenings to hit the streets in groups of two or three, and meet our houseless neighbors, get some dinner with them, and get to know them! We have other supplies and forms of support we can offer our neighbors, and all of this is a means of building community with the most vulnerable in our neighborhood, to be in real relationship with them, and provide mutual support. This is a concrete way of making the Gospel real in our world, so let's get to work! |
|  Men's Fellowship Book Discussion
The Men's group meets for breakfast and book discussion each Wednesday at 8:00 AM at Park Plaza Restaurant on Cadman Plaza West in Brooklyn Heights. All men are welcome even if you are not reading the book or can only attend occasionally. We also discuss and try to solve the issues of today. Please contact Dave Ehlke if you have any questions.
