| There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3.28) These days, it seems more difficult than ever to find unity and harmony in our world, our nation, our families, and even our churches. It is in First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn that I find some hope. Our mission statement says we are "intentionally inclusive and diverse," a statement I have not seen before in other congregations I have served. The statement goes on to remind us we are "models for our children." Indeed, the hope I feel is lodged in these two statements being intertwined. In a congregation, everything that happens, that is said, and that is felt, is a lesson for the children and youth around us. We are constantly teaching them by what we do and say, as well as by what we don't do and don't say. The variety of lives represented in this congregation is greater than any church I have ever served. I hope we celebrate that and guard it with great determination and peace, because every day it is speaking to our children and youth and preparing them to spread the good news that we all can be 'one in Christ Jesus.' |
| This week's guest preacher will be Reverend Corwin Malcolm Davis The Reverend Corwin Malcolm Davis is a burgeoning scholar, public writer, and ordained minister who uses his many strengths to reimagine and to design spaces and practices of care, especially for those in neglected populations.  An honors graduate of Belmont University, Corwin earned the Master of Divinity Degree with a concentration in Black Religion and Culture Studies from Vanderbilt Divinity School. During his time at Vanderbilt he was a Cal Turner Fellow for Moral Leadership, and was awarded the Robert Lewis Butler Award and the William A. Newcomb Prize, awarded to the student who best exemplifies the minister as theologian. Corwin is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Religion at Emory University, where his research explores technologies of spiritual care, ritual and religious practices, and notions of collectivity through the lenses of Black religious traditions, queer theory, and performance studies. At Emory, he has received the George W. Woodruff Fellowship, the Centennial Scholars Fellowship, and externally, fellowships from the Louisville Institute, The Forum for Theological Exploration, and Sacred Writes. Corwin currently serves as the Associate Director for the national Theological Education between the Times project, and the Director of The Writing Center for Emory's Candler School of Theology. A third-generation minister, The Reverend Davis is an ordained Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he has served in the 13th Episcopal District as a pastor and teacher. His service for the church also includes his role as a consultant and project director for the AME Church Publishing House. |

| | First Church Brooklyn Communion Table Covering 
Each Sunday during Black History Month, you will notice this beautiful cloth covering our communion table. The handwoven fabric composed of cotton, silk, and rayon fibers originated in West Africa and is known as "kente cloth." Through a textile technique known as "stripweave", large numbers of thin strips of the cloth are sewn together to produce a finished fabric. The earliest evidence of this traditional technique dates to the 11th century. Originally it was a royal and sacred cloth worn by kings from the Akan people and by royalty from the kingdom of Ashanti. Over time the use of kente cloth has become more widespread. The very large kente cloth on display was provided by Elders Richard and Diane Greene. |

EASTERN FARM WORKERS ASSOCIATION (EFWA) is an all-volunteer unincorporated membership association of farm workers and other low-income workers in Suffolk County. Every winter our members face an untenable "choice" of whether to heat their homes or feed their children. For others it's a "choice" between pay- ing the rent or seeing a doctor. EFWA members help each other meet some of our daily survival needs through EFWA's year-round membership benefit program while we fight to end government policies that have led to job losses, poverty wages, home foreclosures, utility shutoffs and denial of health care. | Looking for Food and Fellowship Volunteers First Church Brooklyn serves a Sunday fellowship lunch once a month at the Church of the Gethsemane, our sister Presbyterian church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, whose members are mostly formerly incarcerated. First Church volunteers prepare a meal, either at home or at the church's kitchen, attend worship at 11:00AM, and serve lunch after service to approximately 15-20 congregants. It's a wonderful opportunity to make good food and even better friends. We are looking for volunteers for February and March, on whatever Sunday works for you. Please contact Marta Nelson if you have questions or would like to volunteer. |
| Food Pantry Serving Thursday, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM 
On Thursday, February 8th, our pantry served 115 clients with the help of 20 volunteers. Up to 783 million people worldwide are hungry. That means one in ten people goes to bed on an empty stomach every night. Volunteers are welcome to arrive on Thursdays between 8:00 and 11:00 AM to serve in the pantry. No advanced notice required. We are currently reading two books: Blackbirds Singing: Inspiring Black Women's Speeches from the Civil War to the Twenty-first Century by Janet Dewar Bell The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanor When Mary Ann Shadd Cary—the first Black woman publisher in North America— declared, "break every yoke . . . let the oppressed go free" to congregants in Chatham, Canada, in 1858, she joined a tradition of African American women speaking for their own liberation. Drawing from a rich archive of political speeches, acclaimed activist and author Janet Dewart Bell, the author of Lighting the Fires of Freedom, which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award, explores this tradition in Blackbirds Singing. Gathering an array of recognized names as well as new discoveries, Bell curates two centuries of stirring public addresses by Black women, from Harriet Tubman and Ella Baker to Barbara Lee and Barbara Jordan. These magnificent speakers explore ethics, morality, courage, authenticity, and leadership, highlighting Black women speaking truth to power in service of freedom and justice. With an expansive historical lens, Blackbirds Singing celebrates the tradition of Black women's political speech and labor, allowing the voices and powerful visions of African American women to speak across generations building power for the world.  First published in 1961, and reissued in this sixtieth anniversary edition with a powerful new introduction by Cornel West, Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth is a masterfuland timeless interrogation of race, colonialism, psychological trauma, and revolutionary struggle, and a continuing influence on movements from Black Lives Matter to decolonization. A landmark text for revolutionaries and activists, The Wretched of the Earth is an eternal touchstone for civil rights, anti-colonialism, psychiatric studies, and Black consciousness movements around the world. Alongside Cornel West's introduction, the book features critical essays by Jean-Paul Sartre and Homi K. Bhabha. This sixtieth anniversary edition of Fanon's most famous text stands proudly alongside such pillars of anti-colonialism and anti-racism as Edward Said's Orientalism and The Autobiography of Malcolm X.
