| | Voting: What World Do We Want to Live in? |
One hears it said a lot this election season—"What world do we want to live in?" And the point of the question is to direct us to vote for the candidate who will deliver that world. I suspect whatever part of the political spectrum you are in, you hear someone asking this question. To me it sounds like a suggestion that we should take hold of the world and make it as we want it. And I wonder how that would go. As a Christian I would say we have quite a long record of how that has gone- Adam and Eve and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; the people building Babel; the party at the bottom of the mountain when Moses was at the top receiving the ten commandments. The list goes on. But there was a moment after the resurrection when the church community shared its belongings and its food together as the leaders sought God's direction in their daily lives. A good moment. A brief moment. That makes me wonder if the question is better asked, "What world does God want us to live in?" That's more than an election season question. More like a daily question, or a moment-to-moment question. And what would our world be like if that's how we approached our opportunities or problems or disputes? What if we paused and asked, "What world, right at this moment, does God want me to live in?" What is that world for you? For me it is a world of forgiveness and grace, of hope and sacrifice, of joy and welcome. It's a world where the first are last and the last first—a really different world—maybe quite different from the one any vote could create. I do hope you vote. And I hope you ask, moment by moment, "What world does God want me to live in?" Interim Pastor, |

| WHITE ROSE Cuban Ministry SPECIAL EVENT SAVE THE DATE! 
Come join members of the White Rose Ministry and attend a concert featuring one of the most sought-after Cuban dance ensembles, The Malpaso Dance Company. | Looking for Food and Fellowship Volunteers First Church Brooklyn serves a Sunday fellowship lunch once each month at the Church of the Gethsemane, our sister Presbyterian church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, whose members are mostly formerly incarcerated. First Church volunteers prepare a meal, either at home or at the church's kitchen, attend worship at 11:00AM, and serve lunch after service to approximately 15-20 congregants. It's a wonderful opportunity to make good food and even better friends. We are looking for volunteers for October and November, on whatever Sunday works for you. Please contact Marta Nelson if you have questions or would like to volunteer. |
| Food Pantry Serving Thursday, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM 
On Thursday, October 24th, our pantry served
135 clients and 17 volunteers with the help of YAI and Packer. According to the 2023 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, between 691 and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022, representing an increase of 122 million people compared to 2019. Volunteers are welcome to arrive on Thursdays between 8:00 and 11:00 AM to serve in the pantry. No advanced notice required. Please contact the church office to inquire about volunteering. We look forward to serving with you.

| Men's Fellowship
The Men's fellowship group meets weekly for breakfast and discussion at the Park Plaza diner (220 Cadman Plaza West, Brooklyn Heights) - Wednesday at 8:00AM. The Men's group is now watching "The Underground Railroad" series available on Amazon Prime. From Amazon: "From Academy Award® winner Barry Jenkins and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, "The Underground Railroad" is a new series that chronicles Cora Randall's desperate bid for freedom in the Antebellum South. After escaping a Georgia plantation for the rumored Underground Railroad, Cora discovers no mere metaphor, but an actual railroad beneath the Southern soil."
