“Give us this day our daily bread.”
I wonder every time I hear these words recited in worship if they are tripping off our tongues without much consideration. We are so accustomed to identifying ourselves as “breadwinners” and being self-reliant. We believe, in our culture, that we are self-made and independent and lift ourselves up by our own bootstraps. I wonder if we would be able to pray these words out loud, one person at a time, in front of each other-- “Give me my daily bread.” It would be confession as much as supplication. Yet, here we are every Sunday beseeching God for bread, whether physical or spiritual bread, to sustain us- one day, every day, at a time. Despite our best efforts to convince otherwise we are not self-sufficient, self-made, self-sustaining. Our privilege may conceal the reality of our dependence on God as well as our dependence on each other. God is always ready to nourish us if we allow it, and no one around us should live in hunger because we have not acted in God’s name.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
We are dependent on you, O Lord, and in you alone we find sustenance. Let us be as merciful with those around us. And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen. |
 Meet this week's guest preacher, Barron M. Flood.
Barron (he/him) is a candidate for ministry in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and has just completed his second year at Princeton Theological Seminary, where he is pursuing a Master of Divinity. Before going to seminary, Barron spent nearly a decade as a commercial litigator, working with a major international law firm. Barron is passionate about cultivating faith communities that make room for curiosity and exploration while remaining deeply committed to loving and supporting neighbors. In addition to his academic work, Barron serves on staff at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he supports the pastoral staff and works with member engagement and the outreach ministries. A lifelong Presbyterian, he a member of The First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York. While originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Barron now calls Brooklyn home. He lives with his husband and their rescue dog, Roz. On weekends, they can often be found walking through Prospect Park or experimenting with new recipes in their kitchen. He is also an avid news reader and podcast listener and always welcomes recommendations. |

The PNC is thrilled to announce that we have completed our first task and the Ministry Discernment Profile (MDP) is posted on our website as well as with Christian Leadership Connection (CLC). Simply stated, the job posting is live!!!

Looking for Food and Fellowship Volunteers First Church Brooklyn serves a Sunday fellowship lunch once each month at the Church of the Gethsemane, our sister Presbyterian church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, whose members are mostly formerly incarcerated. First Church volunteers prepare a meal, either at home or at the church's kitchen, attend worship at 11:00 AM, and serve lunch after service to approximately 15-20 congregants. It's a wonderful opportunity to make good food and even better friends. We are looking for volunteers for May and the rest of 2026, on whatever Sunday works for you. Food Pantry Serving Thursday, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM 
On Thursday, May 7th, our pantry served 91 clients with the help of 13 volunteers including the help of YAI. According to the 2023 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, between 691 and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022, representing an increase of 122 million people compared to 2019. Volunteers are welcome to arrive on Thursdays between 8:00 and 11:00 AM to serve in the pantry. No advanced notice is required. Please contact the church office to inquire about volunteering. We look forward to serving with you. |
