Adriene Thorne, Elder Susan Schultz and I are pleased to present what we hope will be a series of provocative and informative activities in Adult Education this year.  We hope you will join us for as many as you can! Blessings and peace, Wednesday Adult Ed |The Elliot Room | 7:00PM - 8:30PM September 14    Trauma and the Police-Community Relationship – Jim Johnson discusses his essay featured in The Washington Post followed by a conversation about the local effects for the mission of First Church. 21    Meditations for Peace – The United Nations declared September 21 World Peace Day.  Harriette Mandeville will lead a meditation followed by a discussion of world issues and our hopes for international peace. 28    Dying to Live / Theologies of the Body and Embodiment – An introduction to a series of conversations about embodiment, words made flesh, and the body in theological expressions. October 05    Dying for God / Christian martyrdom – The story of Perpetua and Felicitas explores the complexities of gender in the constructions of Christian martyrdom and sainthood. 12    Dying for God / Christian martyrdom – The story of Blandina and the martyrs of Lyon and Vienne explores how the torture and confession of slaves helped shape Christian martyrdom. 19    Dying for God / Latin American liberation – A discussion of selected writings by Oscar Romero & John Sobrino whose death shaped the underpinnings of liberation theology within the histories of Latin America. 26    Living for God through Dance – An exploration of liturgical movement and religious inspired choreography including sections from Alvin Ailey's Revelations. November 02    Yea, though I Walk through the Valley – This program is an introduction to a series of conversations about what we First Church members need to know in order to prepare for the death of loved ones, to provide ecclesial care for our members, and to prepare our own final arrangements.   09    A Place at the Table (Part 1) – A screening and discussion of the documentary produced by Top Chef's Tom Collecchio about hunger in the United States.  The session will be one part viewing, one part discussion. 16    A Place at the Table (Part 2) – A screening and discussion of the documentary produced by Top Chef's Tom Collecchio about hunger in the United States.  The session will be one part viewing, one part discussion. 23    Thanksgiving Break 30    Food Justice/ Food Deserts – A reflection on Farm Worker Justice and our mission work with Eastern Farm Worker's Association of Long Island. December 07    Inspirare: Mary – A celebration of the Holy Mother in scripture and art. 14    Advent of Water and Light – A special worship service of hope and healing. 21    Dickens meets Thurman – An Advent reflection on Dickens' "Ignorance and Want" dialogue (A Christmas Carol) and Thurman's "The Work of Christmas." 25    Merry Christmas (no gathering) January 04    Happy New Year! (no gathering) 07    All-Church Retreat – Details TBD 11    Celebrating MLK – Reading and discussion of the PC (USA) Confession of 1967 written in response to the Civil Rights Movement. 18    Celebrating MLK – Reading and discussion of sections from Strength to Love, a collection of sermons by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr 25    Celebrating MLK – Reading and discussion of Coretta Scott King's "We May Yet Not Only Survive, We May Triumph" and "10 Commandments of Vietnam" speeches. February Black Herstory We will explore and reflect on the theological and spiritual contributions of African American women in sermons, essays, the arts, and in social justice.  Programs TBD. March This Woman's Work We will explore and reflect on the theological and spiritual contributions of women, with a focus on women of color, nationally and globally.  Programs TBD. Sunday Adult Education | The Thurman Room | 10AM - 10:50 AM Traditional bible study in relation to issues and questions of our times September 18 - October 3o  James – Is faith without works dead?  These and other questions of Christian responsibility will be explored through weekly readings from the Epistle of James. November 6, 13, 27        1 John – If we say we love God whom we have not seen yet say we do not love our brother or sister whom we can see, are we being hypocritical?  What is at stake? Is reconciliation possible? December 4, 11, 18        Daniel – Advent meditations are generated from the lion's den, the fiery furnace, and the coming of the Son of Man as we prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ.  January 8, 15, 22, 29, 2017  Ephesians – What does it mean to put on the full armor of God?  This and other questions will be considered in light of the season of Epiphany and hopes for the New Year. February 5, 12, 19, 26, 2017 Colossians – "Since you were raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God (3:1)." We will read the entire epistle with special reflections on what it means to be hidden in Christ. March 5, 12, 19, 26, 2017      Romans in Lent – Following the lectionary texts, we will read selected passages from Paul's letter to the Romans as a Lenten devotional. April 2, 9, 23, 30, 2017 Philippians Revisited – Focusing on the Christ hymn (2:5-11) we will re-read Paul's letter to the Philippians as a testimony to resurrection – Christ's and ours.
