God's peace First Church Family and Friends!
I almost feel like cheering because we will celebrate the Lord's Supper this Sunday! I grew up receiving communion every week in the Catholic church of my childhood, and I still feel a thrill each time we gather at the table to break that soft, sweet bread and share the pungent cup.
For Christians, every gathering at a table has sacred potential, so I am inviting you to bring your bread and beverages to church on Sunday for a special blessing following our holy meal. Bring your water and your wine, your juice boxes and your chocolate milk. Bring bread for your sandwiches, bagels for your morning breakfast, and gluten-free crackers. We will bless it all as a reminder throughout the month of September that each time we break bread and share the cup, we can consider Jesus and the holy meal that calls us to a time of remembrance, communion, and hope. Every meal has sacred potential.
Communion Sunday is also, Protein Sunday! Please bring non-expired, non-perishable protein items for our Thursday morning food pantry guests. Wonderful items would include tuna, beans, peanut butter, and canned chicken. The cans you bring are food for the journey and have their own sacred potential.
First Church, as we are all hopefully resting this Labor Day weekend, thanking God both for the gifts of work and of leisure, please keep in your prayers those who work 365 days a year and those who would give anything to be working. Pray also for those who labor in professions that are rarely celebrated or honored and see what you might do to celebrate or honor someone who goes unappreciated. In this way, you are food for someone's journey, and you are unleashing the sacred potential within you.

Summer Worship Schedule
September 4th is the final week for the Summer Sunday worship schedule. We return to 11:00AM Worship on September 11th.
This is your last chance to join the summer choir that gathers Sunday morning at 9:00 AM with no Thursday rehearsal. It is a great time for those who would like to sing with the choir in a casual environment!

Focus on Hunger
The Mission and Social Action Committee has a goal to educate the entire congregation on the issues around food and hunger in our country and around the world, and why First Presbyterian is involved in alleviating the suffering associated with a lack of food.
On Thursday, September 1st, the Food Pantry served 88 clients with 20 volunteers.
|
Over 20 million children receive free or reduced-price lunch each school day. Less than half of them get breakfast and only 10 percent have access to summer feeding sites.
|

First Church continues to be active with the Church of Gethsemane.

Potential Family Social work Project:
Gloria Sellers, Jane & Dave Ehlke have been meeting with Gethsemane staff on plans for a potential Family social work project in conjunction with the School of Social Work at NYU.
