Wow First Church Family and Friends!
I don't know about you, but this 5-week journey through the psalms has shifted my life in some noticeable ways. Like you, I come to church on Sunday to praise God, and, like you, I also carry things that make me cry, "Help!" What a gift to pray the psalms of praise, to sit in the dark of the psalms of lament, to be reminded of the shepherding God in the psalms of trust, and to come out of the dark with the gratitude found in the psalms of thanks.
This Sunday we conclude our series, as we began, with praise, but this is praise like we have not yet experienced on our summer journey. This praise is aware of the cost. It is praise that has seen some things, experienced some stuff, fallen into some pits. All the while, whether we have perceived it or not, God has brought us through valleys, placed our feet on dry land, and lifted our head.
Many of us can find at least one reason to praise God, and on Sunday we will do just that. The music will be marvelous, as usual; the warmth and welcome just what you need to know that God is real, and God's Spirit, combined with our praise, enough of the mystery that happens every Sunday when we gather in community, to invigorate the best of who God created us to be. I pray you will join us at 10 am in person or via our livestream.
God's work of love and justice is calling us, and I hope you feel renewed to engage that work with the psalms as your guide and encouragement.

Clark Street Subway Station Closure!
The Clark Street (2) (3) subway station will be closed on weekends from June 16 to Spring 2018. People who normally take the subway to First Church need to walk from Borough Hall or take the B25, B26, B38, B41, B52 or B103 bus.

Seeking Housing for a Student from late August
If you have a room to rent or are looking for a roommate beginning in late August, please contact Jenny Gage - "A friend's son is moving to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts and I am trying to help them find housing for Isaiah."

Plymouth Church is hosting Vacation Bible Camp the week of August 7th
Children ages three through thirteen are invited to put on some scrubs and lend their hearts and hands. The curriculum, A Heart for Missions, brings the daily Bible story to life through its outreach component. Be a Good Samaritan and hear God's call to action. Help local school children with a book drive, collect diapers and toiletries for CHiPS (Christian Help in Park Slope) and create items to share with seniors at a nearby center.
It will be a busy, memorable week filled with laughter and learning. Children are welcome to join us for the entire week or for the days that work for their schedule. Our day begins at 9:00am and ends at 3:00pm. Please pack a lunch, swim gear (for sprinklers) and a change of clothes for your child. Snack will be provided.

Focus on Hunger
The Mission and Social Action Committee has a goal to educate the entire congregation on the issues around food and hunger in our country and around the world, and why First Presbyterian is involved in alleviating the suffering associated with a lack of food.
Volunteers needed Wednesday evenings from 7:15-8:00 PM to receive fresh fruits and vegetables for our food pantry. If you are available to come to First Church Brooklyn and receive donations from our partners at Brooklyn Bridge CSA and Sweet Pea CSA, please call the church office to be connected to pantry coordinator, Jane Woland.

In 2015, 13 percent of US households (15.8 million households) were food insecure.
|
On Thursday, July 20th, our Food Pantry served 146 guests with the
help of 16 volunteers.
|

Reminders and Looking Ahead

Brooklyn Rock and Roll Half Marathon Training
Group runs are Mondays at 7:00 PM and Saturdays at 8:00 AM. Meet in the Peace Garden this Saturday and run or walk with our team. All are welcome to train. You need not run the marathon. NEXT WEEK, run/walks will take place in Prospect Park (NOTE LOCATION CHANGE). Meet at Grand Army Plaza on Monday July 31st at 7 PM and Saturday, August 5th at 8 AM.

Men's Fellowship Breakfast
Join us as we discuss the book "A Cloud of Witnesses", Edited by Joyce Hollyday and Jim Wallis. A collection of 35 short stories of exceptional people grouped by the 8 Beatitudes.
Come join us even if you are not reading the book.

CHILDREN, YOUTH, and FAMILIES (CYF)
Sunday School is on hiatus for the summer and will resume Sunday, September 10th. All God's children will worship together throughout the summer. The nursery remains open to provide wee care to children 4 and under. Biblical based books and crayons are available for people of all ages on the bookshelf in the narthex. Help yourself to materials, and thank you for returning them so that others may enjoy them in the future.

Criminal Justice Activities in Concert
With the Church of Gethsemane
First Church continues to be active in concert with the Church of Gethsemane.
- Sunday Lunch after Worship. We are looking for volunteers for July 30th.
- Administrative Support: Ongoing administrative support has been provided by Jane and Dave Ehlke. The Project Connect database has been expanded to 225 members in 30 different prisons.
