Greetings First Church Family and Friends!
For the rest of the summer, we are exploring the sacraments. In the Catholic Church, that many of our members grew up in, there are seven sacraments. In our Reformed tradition, there are only two - Baptism and the Lord's Supper. On this Communion Sunday, we will focus on the meaning of the table. What is this meal that we celebrate every month, and why should we care?!
We will gather at 10 am on Sunday to read the mail of an ancient church, a church that got the meaning of the meal all wrong. They turned the table into the domain of the wealthy and well-fed at the expense of the poor and hungry. They failed to realize that the Lord's Supper is God's dinner party, and all God's people eat the same food. Thanks to this early church, in the city of Corinth, we know what the table demands of us - a world that works for all people, without distinction.
The meaning of the table is to be evident in our daily living not just on the Sundays that we celebrate the Lord's Supper. Every minute of every day, we are called to co-create a world, with God, where all are loved and fed – literally! And you have an opportunity this Sunday, and every first Sunday, to make it be so. Bring your non-perishable proteins to the church food pantry – beans, tuna, chicken, and nut butters.
Bring your delicious food, so that those who are hungry may eat. And if you are hungry, know that our food pantry will now be open on Sundays immediately following worship to extend God's Dinner Party, without distinction, to whoever will come.
It's going to be a feast of love and music and justice this Sunday, and we are going to make sure that no one in our community goes away without the groceries they need. Thank you for giving, and thank you for receiving.

Clark Street Subway Station Closure!
The Clark Street (2) (3) subway station will be closed on weekends until Spring 2018. People who normally take the subway to First Church need to walk from Borough Hall or take the B25, B26, B38, B41, B52 or B103 bus.

Seeking Housing for a Student from late August
If you have a room to rent or are looking for a roommate beginning in late August, please contact Jenny Gage - "A friend's son is moving to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts and I am trying to help them find housing for Isaiah."

Plymouth Church is hosting Vacation Bible Camp the week of August 7th
Children ages three through thirteen are invited to put on some scrubs and lend their hearts and hands. The curriculum, A Heart for Missions, brings the daily Bible story to life through its outreach component. Be a Good Samaritan and hear God's call to action. Help local school children with a book drive, collect diapers and toiletries for CHiPS (Christian Help in Park Slope) and create items to share with seniors at a nearby center.
It will be a busy, memorable week filled with laughter and learning. Children are welcome to join us for the entire week or for the days that work for their schedule. Our day begins at 9:00am and ends at 3:00pm. Please pack a lunch, swim gear (for sprinklers) and a change of clothes for your child. Snack will be provided.

"Build the Block", Neighborhood Policing & Safety Meeting

The NYPD Officers serving your community, along with New York City Council Member Stephen Levin, invite you to a discussion of the public safety problems in our neighborhood.
With neighborhood policing, the Neighborhood Coordination officers (NCOs), and the sector officers who work with them, have been given more time and opportunity to collaborate with residents in identifying and solving local problems and crime. The same officers are assigned to our community each day, so these officers learn the neighborhood, its challenges and potential, and the people who call it home.
This is a new way of doing business for the NYPD, and we need your help to make it work. We want to hear from a broad range of voices about what it will take to make all the residents of our neighborhood feel safe and secure. Please join us for what we hope will be a lively and productive discussion.

Focus on Hunger
The Mission and Social Action Committee has a goal to educate the entire congregation on the issues around food and hunger in our country and around the world, and why First Presbyterian is involved in alleviating the suffering associated with a lack of food.
Volunteers needed Wednesday evenings from 7:15-8:00 PM to receive fresh fruits and vegetables for our food pantry. If you are available to come to First Church Brooklyn and receive donations from our partners at Brooklyn Bridge CSA and Sweet Pea CSA, please call the church office to be connected to pantry coordinator, Jane Woland.

In 2014, 5.4 million seniors (over age 60), or 9 percent of all seniors were food insecure.

On Thursday, August 3rd, our Food Pantry served 136 guests with the
help of 21 volunteers.

Brooklyn Rock and Roll Half Marathon Training
Brooklyn Samaritans group runs are Mondays at 7:00 PM and Saturdays at 8:00 AM. Saturday the 5th they will meet at Grand Army Plaza (Prospect Park), then Monday and next Saturday in the Peace Garden for their run/walk. Ask Rev Adriene to add you to the Facebook group for meeting location, as they will continue to vary. All are welcome to train - running or walking; you need not run the marathon.

Join us as we discuss the book "A Cloud of Witnesses", Edited by Joyce Hollyday and Jim Wallis. A collection of 35 short stories of exceptional people grouped by the 8 Beatitudes.
Come join us even if you are not reading the book.

CHILDREN, YOUTH, and FAMILIES (CYF)
Sunday School is on hiatus for the summer and will resume Sunday, September 10th. All God's children will worship together throughout the summer. The nursery remains open to provide wee care to children 4 and under. Biblical based books and crayons are available for people of all ages on the bookshelf in the narthex. Help yourself to materials, and thank you for returning them so that others may enjoy them in the future.

- Administrative Support: Ongoing administrative support has been provided by Jane and Dave Ehlke. The Project Connect database has been expanded to 225 members in 30 different prisons.
