| | Fruit of the Spirit - Faithfulness |
Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name. (Psalm 86.11) "Your" appears three times in 22 words. And, more specifically - your way, your truth, your name. What's left for me? An undivided heart! Here is a simple 3-step spiritual exercise: What ways have guided me so far today? Have I depended on my ideas and my views of my work or the world or the church as I live out this day? At what point have I stopped and asked, "What are your ways, Gracious God, that I could be following, regarding this decision or action I am considering?" How different are my ways and God's ways today? In what truth am I walking today? Are my actions today reflecting what I know to be true about God, the truth that is made real in the person of Jesus? Would someone who is seeing me act today recognize what I am doing and how I am doing it as a reflection of my Lord's love and mercy and grace? Is my heart undivided and revering God's name? You have partially answered that already, having done steps one and two. Now for the revering. To revere is to worship and admire and respect. We do this in prayer and confession and submitting ourselves to God's ways and truth. Stop for a moment and bow your head in prayer and seek the presence of God's Spirit to guide you once more in God's ways and truth so you can embrace the unity and peace that can be yours in your heart of hearts. | Looking for Food and Fellowship Volunteers First Church Brooklyn serves a Sunday fellowship lunch once each month at the Church of the Gethsemane, our sister Presbyterian church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, whose members are mostly formerly incarcerated. First Church volunteers prepare a meal, either at home or at the church's kitchen, attend worship at 11:00AM, and serve lunch after service to approximately 15-20 congregants. It's a wonderful opportunity to make good food and even better friends. We are looking for volunteers for September and October, on whatever Sunday works for you. Please contact Marta Nelson if you have questions or would like to volunteer. |
| Food Pantry Serving Thursday, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM 
On Thursday, September 19th, our pantry served 140 clients with the help of 14 wonderful volunteers. According to the 2023 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, between 691 and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022, representing an increase of 122 million people compared to 2019. Volunteers are welcome to arrive on Thursdays between 8:00 and 11:00 AM to serve in the pantry. No advanced notice required. Please contact the church office to inquire about volunteering. We look forward to serving with you. |

| Men's Fellowship
The Men's group have resumed their weekly breakfast schedule at the Park Plaza diner (220 Cadman Plaza West, Brooklyn Heights) - Wednesday at 8:00AM. The group is reading and discussing "James" by Percival Everett. From Amazon: "A brilliant, action-packed reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both harrowing and ferociously funny, told from the enslaved Jim's point of view. "When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond."
