| They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.(Acts 2.42) As we begin our 203rd year we celebrate Homecoming this Sunday, a day to reflect on God's calling that created our community of faith which testifies to God's steadfast love and grace. At 9:45 a.m. we will study Paul's letter to the Philippians, a letter about being friends in Christ who celebrate each other's joys and support each other when distressed. At 11 a.m. we will gather in the sanctuary to hear God's word, sing God's praises, and pray for each other and our world. We will baptize Eila Glen Thomas, child of Marell Ellis Thomas and Ryan Thomas. It is such a privilege for congregations today to have children to baptize. We are blessed! We will also introduce the church staff and their responsibilities that aid us all as we engage in ministry and mission. Following worship we will have a relaxed time to celebrate our community in fellowship. May I suggest on this Homecoming Sunday- - We sit in a different pew and worship with someone different than our usual neighbors. And if we are really brave, to worship with someone we haven't met before. It will be good to break away from our implicit seating chart.
- We aim to visit with members and visitors after worship whose names we do not know and whose stories we have not heard.
- We extend this day of celebration and fellowship by inviting someone to lunch whom we wish to know better. I know I will be doing that myself.
What a privilege to celebrate hundreds of years of fellowship and take one day to grow our relationships as we begin a new year. Happy Homecoming! Interim Pastor, |

| Looking for Food and Fellowship Volunteers First Church Brooklyn serves a Sunday fellowship lunch once each month at the Church of the Gethsemane, our sister Presbyterian church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, whose members are mostly formerly incarcerated. First Church volunteers prepare a meal, either at home or at the church's kitchen, attend worship at 11:00AM, and serve lunch after service to approximately 15-20 congregants. It's a wonderful opportunity to make good food and even better friends. We are looking for volunteers for September and October, on whatever Sunday works for you. Please contact Marta Nelson if you have questions or would like to volunteer. |
| Food Pantry Serving Thursday, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM 
On Thursday, September 26th, our pantry served 152 clients with the help of 7 wonderful volunteers. According to the 2023 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, between 691 and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022, representing an increase of 122 million people compared to 2019. Volunteers are welcome to arrive on Thursdays between 8:00 and 11:00 AM to serve in the pantry. No advanced notice required. Please contact the church office to inquire about volunteering. We look forward to serving with you. |

| Men's Fellowship
The Men's group have resumed their weekly breakfast schedule at the Park Plaza diner (220 Cadman Plaza West, Brooklyn Heights) - Wednesday at 8:00AM. The group is reading and discussing "James" by Percival Everett. From Amazon: "A brilliant, action-packed reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both harrowing and ferociously funny, told from the enslaved Jim's point of view. "When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond."
