| | This Sunday we begin the journey of Holy Week, starting with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem this Sunday, moving to the upper room on Thursday for the Lord's Supper, to the cross on Good Friday, and finishing with Easter resurrection the following Sunday. Each of these is an important step on the journey that adds distinct perspective. While our Easter celebration will be glorious and moving, the miracle of the resurrection is so much richer when the rest of the week is included. I'm especially thinking of Good Friday, a worship service that will be led by our Deacons. They will be sharing brief reflections in the voices of some of the people who were at the cross. The good in Good Friday is expressed so beautifully in the hymn: "What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul." Jesus steps in to break the power of sin with his sacrificial love for us. For me, this makes Easter resurrection even more amazing as God raises him and grants us new life as God's forgiven people. I hope you will consider being present on Friday as well as Sunday this year. The week includes: Maundy Thursday, 6 p.m. in the Elliott Room for an agape feast, including a simple meal. Looking for Food and Fellowship Volunteers First Church Brooklyn serves a Sunday fellowship lunch once each month at the Church of the Gethsemane, our sister Presbyterian church in Park Slope, Brooklyn, whose members are mostly formerly incarcerated. First Church volunteers prepare a meal, either at home or at the church's kitchen, attend worship at 11:00AM, and serve lunch after service to approximately 15-20 congregants. It's a wonderful opportunity to make good food and even better friends. We are looking for volunteers for April and the rest of 2026, on whatever Sunday works for you. Food Pantry Serving Thursday, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM 
On Thursday, March 19th, our pantry served 70 clients with the help of 18 volunteers including YAI and AHRC. According to the 2023 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, between 691 and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022, representing an increase of 122 million people compared to 2019. Volunteers are welcome to arrive on Thursdays between 8:00 and 11:00 AM to serve in the pantry. No advanced notice is required. Please contact the church office to inquire about volunteering. We look forward to serving with you. |
