Greetings First Church Family and Friends,
I am grateful to God for the wisdom and care of Elder Patty Watwood in the pulpit this Sunday morning. Please hold her in your prayers as she does the weighty work of preaching God’s word.
20 years ago, God’s children howled and wept. We grieved the tremendous loss of life on a day that changed our world. We also came to a greater understanding of God’s children who call the divine by another name.
God is both the one brooding over the chaos and the one creating all things and calling them good. Because God is God, we can come with our mixed feelings and our questions, our anxieties, and our hopes. Because God is God, we can bring our messy selves and our upside-down world to the one who can make them good again. May you feel our good God, amid the chaos and calm, holding you this day and every day.

Elder Patricia Watwood

Born in 1971, St. Louis, Missouri
Lives in Brooklyn, NY
Patricia Watwood is an artist and a leading figure in the contemporary figurative realist movement. Her subjects are primarily women and figures, and she engages mythic narratives to explore meaning and the human condition. Her paintings have been exhibited at the Beijing World Art Museum, The European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), The Butler Museum, and is in the collections of The St. Louis University Museum of Art, and The New Britain Museum of American Art. Her commissioned portraits hang in institutions such as St. Louis City Hall, Washington University, Kennedy School of Government, and at The Harvard Art Museums.
Patty has been a member and choir member of First Presbyterian since 1996, and was ordained as an elder in 2015. She is an Artist Member of the Salmagundi Club of New York, where she is the current First Vice President (2021). She is a Signature Member of the Portrait Society of America, and selected as a Living Master by the Art Renewal Center. She’s represented by Portraits Inc., Dacia Gallery NYC, and others.
Watwood earned her MFA with honors from New York Academy of Art, and studied with Jacob Collins as a founding member of the Water Street Atelier. Watwood has produced instructional DVDs including “Creating Portraits from Life,” with Streamline Art Video, has been a professor of drawing at New York Academy of Art. She has created several online drawing courses, including Seven Days of Drawing, with the creative streaming platform Craftsy.com. She has written articles for American Artist, American Arts Quarterly, and Fine Art Connoisseur magazines, and teaches painting in Brooklyn, online with Terracotta.org, and in workshops around the country. She is currently writing an instruction book on drawing with Monacelli Studio Press (anticipated 2022).

Interfaith 9-11 Observance on the Promenade
The Brooklyn Heights Interfaith Clergy Association (BHICA) needs volunteers to staff a table on the Promenade, at the end of Montague St. We will offer supplies (pens, card stock paper, tie ribbons) to allow walkers to stop by during the day (8:30 AM - 7 PM) and leave a written prayer or message tied to the fence. This has been a popular offering in recent years.
We need two volunteers per 30-minute shifts who can hand out supplies. Please sign up here if you can take a shift during the day on Saturday, September 11. The Interfaith Service will be at 7:15 PM.

Men's Fellowship Book Discussion
First Church's Men's Group meet in person every Wednesday morning from 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM. They gather at Park Plaza Diner, 220 Cadman Plaza West where they will discuss what they are reading and, if time allows, solve as many of the world's problems as possible. We are currently discussing:

by Joseph Campbell
In this beloved 1988 PBS series, mythologist and storyteller Joseph Campbell joins Bill Moyers to explore what enduring myths can tell us about our lives. In each of six episodes –“The Hero’s Adventure,” “The Message of the Myth,” “The First Storytellers,” “Sacrifice and Bliss,” “Love and the Goddess,” and “Masks of Eternity” — Moyers and Campbell focus on a character or theme found in cultural and religious mythologies. Campbell argues that these timeless archetypes continue to have a powerful influence on the choices we make and the ways we live.
Released shortly after Campbell’s death on October 30, 1987, The Power of Myth was one of the most popular TV series in the history of public television, and continues to inspire new audiences.(1988)

Food Pantry 
Serving Thursday, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
On Thursday, September 9th, our pantry served 180 clients with the help of 7 volunteers.
We are maintaining food bins and a community fridge at the church to provide round the clock support to the food insecure and unhoused. If you need food, please help yourself. If you have food to share, thank you for dropping off.
Volunteers are welcome to arrive on Thursdays between 9:00-11:00 am to serve in the pantry. No advanced notice required. Please contact the church office to inquire about volunteering. We look forward to serving with you.
